Bell Media Helps Ensure Toronto's Bike Share Program Continues Operation
TORONTO, Dec. 4, 2013 /CNW/ - The City of Toronto today announced that its bike share program will continue to operate after an agreement was reached between the City and PBSC, the company that administers the BIXI Toronto service. This agreement was made possible by the approval of City Council to accept $5 million from Bell Media's Astral Out-of-Home division through the City's street furniture program.
As part of its ongoing commitment to the City of Toronto and its residents, Bell Media has agreed to convert future expenditures designated for the Coordinated Street Furniture Program's automatic public toilets to support Toronto's bike share program. Bell Media's decision will assist the popular bike-sharing program to continue operating.
"Astral Out-of-Home has worked closely with the City of Toronto for the past seven years, and with the support of Bell Media we are pleased to help ensure the continued operation of the City's bike share program," said Ron Hutchinson, Vice-President, Real Estate for Astral Out-of-Home. "Bell Media has made this decision because of its commitment to support solutions that are beneficial to Toronto's residents and city streets."
Astral Out-of-Home became a division of Bell Media in July 2013 as part of Bell's acquisition of Astral. Astral Out-of-Home provides Torontonians with an innovative street furniture program at absolutely no cost to taxpayers.
The Toronto Coordinated Street Furniture program was launched in 2007 and provides essential street furniture elements including transit shelters, litter/recycling bins, newspaper bins and corrals, information/wayfinding pillars, public posting columns, bicycle racks and benches. The program is fully funded by advertising and the 20-year contract has a value of $915 million for the City of Toronto in street furniture, repairs, maintenance and capital expenditures. ITU WORKSHOP AFFIRMS NABA VIEW THAT BROADCASTING IS KEY COMMUNICATIONS MEDIUM IN EMERGENCIES
December 4, 2013 / TORONTO, Canada – NABA is pleased to announce that the ITU recently held a Workshop on Emergency Broadcasting in Geneva on November 21st where the importance of international cooperation to enhance the reach of broadcasting in emergency situations was highlighted and stressed. This initiative, largely due to the work of NABA and NABA-member CBS, is reflected in a NABA (April, 2013) contribution to Study Group 6 (SG-6) on The Importance of Radio and Television Broadcasting for Emergency Communications to the Public. This contribution was presented by Lynn Claudy of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) representing NABA. Mr. Claudy along with Gary Stanley (Babcock International, UK) were also both named co-Rapporteurs for this important work.
A new ITU Report on Emergency Broadcasting will be finalized by April, 2014 and made available online free of charge. A draft Report has been compiled by the co-Rapporteurs and is currently available at: www.itu.int/en/ITU-R/study-groups/rsg6/Pages/default.aspx. Also, a video is available on the ITU’s YouTube Channel that features SG-6 Chair, Christoph Dosch (IRT Germany) speaking on the vital importance of broadcasting in disasters (http://youtu.be/60l1GXZUddM). For more information, please view the dedicated webpage for the Workshop (www.itu.int/go/ITU-R/RWP6A- 2013) where the draft report can also be downloaded as well as the presentations and other information.
“Emergency broadcasting plays a critical role in the rapid dissemination of information to the public, and is a key element in helping save lives in the aftermath of natural disasters.”
- Hamadoun I. Touré, ITU Secretary General
NABA feels that evidence is overwhelming on the critical need for broadcasters to retain access to adequate RF spectrum and that terrestrial television and radio broadcasters provide the fastest and most effective provision of information to the public in critical situations. Broadcasting infrastructure provides reliable point-to-everywhere delivery of essential information and safety advice to the public, first responders, and others via widely available consumer receivers, both mobile and fixed. Terrestrial television and radio broadcast infrastructure is highly robust in the face of disasters that often damage facilities or cut power to the infrastructures of other communications technologies, including two-way voice and data services.
The North American Broadcasters Association (NABA) is an association of broadcasters in Canada,
Mexico, and the United States. The NABA Technical Committee is its standing technical body. NABA is
thus in a position to present the technical viewpoints of the most authoritative associations of
professional North American Broadcasters in television and sound program production, postproduction,
and distribution for terrestrial, satellite, and cable broadcasting.
NABA is a Sector Member of ITU-R and a long-time participant in ITU-R Study Groups, Working
Parties, Task Groups, Rapporteur Groups, etc. NABA numbers among its members Chairmen, Vice-
Chairmen, and members of the above groups. NABA also participates widely in the ITU work on radio,
television, and multimedia services.

TVOKids' Match-a Match-a Island game helps early learners develop crucial spatial thinking skills
TORONTO, Dec. 2, 2013 /CNW/ - Today, TVOKids is launching Match-a Match-a Island, a fun matching game designed to help children ages four to seven develop their spatial thinking skills, an area of growing concern for educators. The game is available at tvokids.com for desktop play and as a free app for IOS and Android tablets.
There is growing consensus that spatial thinking is a fundamental part of academic learning, especially in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. In Ontario, a group of math researchers from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto (OISE) and Trent University have been working with teachers on the Math for Young Children project which acknowledged a greater focus is needed in the development and improvement of lessons for young children's spatial thinking.
"TVOKids created Match-a Match-a Island in response to what OISE researchers were telling us about the importance of spatial thinking as a key marker of academic success," says Patricia Ellingson, TVO Creative Head for Children's and Parents' Media. "TVOKids uses digital media like Matcha Matcha Island to support the Ontariocurriculum and the needs of teachers, and to help students learn in new ways."
Match-a Match-a Island is a suite of three games with the first part, a mental rotation and matching game, available now, and parts two and three to follow in the winter and spring of 2014. In the first game, players are presented with a choice of similar images. Two of the images are exactly the same but one of them is slightly rotated in relation to its twin. A third image is the mirror image of the other two. The player must match the rotated, but not reflected images. As the levels increase, so does the degree of rotation and the number of images. Kids, parents or teachers can customize the difficulty of the game to suit their individual learning needs. Once the player gets through a round, they are rewarded with animated stickers that they can use to decorate their own virtual island.
"Match-a Match-a Island targets the development of mental rotation skills, which over the years has emerged as a key marker of spatial thinking," says Zachary Hawes, Research Officer with the Robertson Program for Inquiry-based Teaching in Science and Mathematics at OISE. "Given that spatial thinking receives little instructional time in early learning educational contexts, a game like this is timely and offers a potentially valuable learning tool for teachers, parents, and students."
Match-a Match-a Island was created by TVOKids in collaboration with OISE. All content produced by TVOKids is developed with an on-staff educator and classroom-tested. To see the resources that TVOKids put into the creation of Match-a Match-a Island, including research, design, production and testing visit How TVOKids Builds An Educational Game at TVOParents.com.

CRTC wireless code comes into force: Canadians can cancel their contracts without penalty after two years
OTTAWA, Dec. 2, 2013 /CNW/ - The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today marked the coming into force of its wireless code, which enables Canadians to cancel their contracts at no cost after a maximum of two years. The code also makes it easier for Canadians to understand their contracts for cellphones and other mobile devices and sets out their basic rights.
"The coming into force of the wireless code marks the beginning of a more dynamic marketplace for wireless services," said Jean-Pierre Blais, Chairman of the CRTC. "Rather than feeling trapped by their contracts, Canadians will be able to make informed choices about the wireless services—and service providers—that best meet their needs every two years, if not more often. It will be in the best interests of wireless companies to adopt innovative practices to ensure their customers are satisfied and to attract new ones."
The wireless code will apply to all new contracts signed as of December 2, 2013. It will also apply to existing contracts that are renewed or extended, or where the key terms are amended, as of that same date. In addition, the code will apply to all wireless contracts as of June 3, 2015, regardless of when they were signed.
Among other things, the wireless code will allow individual and small business consumers to:
· terminate their wireless contracts after two years without cancellation fees
· limit data charges in excess of the usage defined in their plans at $50/month
· limit national and international data roaming charges in excess of the usage defined in their plans at $100/month
· have their cellphone unlocked after 90 days, or immediately if they paid for the device in full
· return their cellphone, within 15 days and specific usage limits, if they are unhappy with their service
· accept or decline changes to the key terms of a fixed-term (i.e., 2-year) contract, and
· receive a contract that is easy to read and understand.
The CRTC developed the wireless code at the request of the wireless industry. The code addresses the main frustrations that Canadians shared with the CRTC during its public consultation, which included the length of wireless contracts, cancellation fees, bill shock and other industry practices.
For more information about the wireless code, please visit www.crtc.gc.ca/wirelesscode.
CRTC Chairman Jean-Pierre Blais will host a French-language Twitter Chat today from 13:00-13:45 EST to answer questions about the wireless code. Follow @CRTCfra and tweet questions with the hashtag #CodeSansFil.
Mr. Blais will also host an English-language Twitter Chat today from 14:00-14:45 EST on the same topic. Follow@CRTCeng and tweet questions with the hashtag #WirelessCode.

NEW SEASON OF RYERSON ON THE AIR DEBUTS ON ROGERS TV
Four outstanding RTA School of Media student projects showcased in season premiere
TORONTO, December 2, 2013 --- On Tuesday, December 3rd at 7:30 PM, Ryerson On The Air will begin its second season, featuring four outstanding RTA School of Media student projects on Rogers TV Cable 10/63 in Toronto/Scarborough. This newest episode continues the RTA School of Media’s partnership with Rogers TV to showcase the best student productions on screens across the Greater Toronto Area.
Ryerson On The Air is a programming block that increases public access to student-produced content. In an hour-long episode, Ryerson On The Air will engage audiences with four diverse student works: AEBC PSA Campaign, ‘Lioness’ Music Video, ‘The Global City’, and ‘The Meek, The Mad and The Misinformed’.
The Toronto chapter of the Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians (AEBC) partnered with the RTA community to raise awareness about increased inclusion of blind, deaf-blind and partially sighted Canadians. “From concept to execution, RTA students created a campaign that was broadcast nationally by most networks and local stations; a true testament to the value of AEBC's message and the quality of work being produced by our students,” noted Rob Carver, RTA Instructor and Executive Producer of the project.
‘The Global City’ is the newest installment of a real-time, live-broadcast between universities around the world. An entirely student-led program, this episode provides an inside look into the movie industries in India, USA, Israel and Canada. Executive Producer and supervising Professor Marion Coomey comments, “It’s an exciting opportunity for Ryerson students and our partners around the world to be able to tell their stories on Rogers TV.”
‘The Meek, The Mad and The Misinformed’ is a five-minute stopmotion animation. The dark comedy tells the story of a downtrodden butler’s mishap with his curmudgeonly old boss.
‘Lioness’ is a vibrant music video by Maccie Paquette with an infectious beat. The music video’s artist, director and crew are RTA students and graduates.

Academy Celebrating 65 Years of Canadian Talent
TORONTO | MONTREAL, December 2, 2013 – In 2014 the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television proudly fetes 65 years of awards celebrating Canadian screen stars on both sides of the camera, it was announced today.
“The Academy is building a legacy to honour Canada’s remarkable screen talent,” says Academy Chair Martin Katz. “It all began in 1949 with the Canadian Film Awards and prestigious hosts such as silver screen star Mary Pickford and Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent. We think this well-kept secret is worth sharing with all Canadians,” says Katz.
The awards have evolved from humble, pre-television beginnings in 1949 at Ottawa’s Little Elgin Theatre to a star-studded red carpet Canadian Screen Awards event broadcast live on CBC from Toronto’s Sony Centre for the Performing Arts in 2014.
The 2014 CANADIAN SCREEN AWARDS will fete this landmark anniversary on its CBC Broadcast Gala on Sunday, March 9th at 8 pm, hosted by Canadian comedy legend Martin Short, and at activities throughout Canadian Screen Week (March 3-9, 2014).
“From Mary Pickford to Martin Short, our awards have evolved, changed names, added television and digital productions to the competition and inspired the official founding of the Academy in 1979, but without fail, we have always celebrated glamorous, talented Canadians,” says Academy CEO Helga Stephenson.
65th anniversary events will be announced at the 2014 Canadian Screen Awards press conference on January 13, 2014.

DISNEY XD GIVES KIDS THE CHANCE TO HELP DESIGN NEW SERIES Fangbone - VOTING BEGINS TODAY ON DISNEYXD.CA INTERACTIVE WEBSITE
Toronto, December 2, 2013 – Disney XD is putting the ‘fan’ in Fangbone by giving viewers the power to call the shots for its latest pilot. The network’s new animated adventure follows the epic journey of a nine-year-old barbarian warrior and is getting an early start on DisneyXD.ca where viewers can influence the pilot’s creative direction by voting for what they want to hear. Feedback from Disney XD fans on the interactive website will be incorporated into the show ahead of its network premiere in late January 2014.
“We are always making original content with fans in mind, and this approach gives us the chance to get the fans involved and invested from the get go,” said Michael Goldsmith, Director, Original Programming, Disney XD. “By allowing them to weigh in during the decision making process, we’re able to better serve our viewers and create a show that they feel connected to.”
As part of the at-home adventure, fans who visit DisneyXD.ca/fangbone are able to weigh in on some of the most central elements to the show. Navigated by the comical Twinklestick, of the Mighty Wizard Clan, site visitors will watch two scenes and can vote on which features they prefer. They will have the opportunity to choose the voices of the title character Fangbone, and his loyal friend, Bill, as well as select between a dramatic or quirky musical score for a battle scene where the pair faces off against the evil Tyrano-pug. Voting opens today and will continue for the next five weeks.
“We could not be more excited to be sharing Fangbone with the Disney XD audience and to have them help us make creative decisions,” said Michelle Melanson Cuperus, VP of Production & Development at Radical Sheep Productions. “This ensures we make a show that viewers will love.”
Fangbone is a fish-out-of-water comedy adventure series based on the bestselling graphic novel series, Fangbone: Third Grade Barbarian, by Michael Rex. The title character is a young barbarian warrior from Skullbania who travels through a magical portal into the suburbs of our world and lands suddenly in Eastwood Elementary’s third grade class. His mission: to protect the blackened big toe of the Venomous Drool from being reunited with its master – the evilest sorcerer in current day existence. With the help of his new sidekick Bill, Fangbone embarks on a quest to outwit Drool’s monsterish minions while discovering the modern world.
The pilot for Fangbone was developed and produced by Radical Sheep Productions Inc. Rex, along with John Leitch of Radical Sheep, serve as Executive Producers with Michelle Melanson Cuperus as Supervising Producer. Simon Racioppa and Richard Elliott also serve as Executive Producers and Showrunners. Fangbone is supported by the Bell Digital Pilot Fund and the CMF.
