Leaving behind a thank-you note
From Brian Williams' Feb. 26 blog
After tonight's broadcast and after looting our hotel mini-bars, we're going to try to brave the blizzard and fly east to home and hearth, and to do laundry well into next week. Before we leave this thoroughly polite country, the polite thing to do is leave behind a thank-you note. Thank you, Canada: For being such good hosts. For your unfailing courtesy. For your (mostly) beautiful weather. For scheduling no more than 60 percent of your float plane departures at the exact moment when I was trying to say something on television. For not seeming to mind the occasional (or constant) good-natured mimicry of your accents. For your unique TV commercials -- for companies like Tim Hortons -- which made us laugh and cry. For securing this massive event without choking security, and without publicly displaying a single automatic weapon. For having the best garment design and logo-wear of the games -- you've made wearing your name a cool thing to do. For the sportsmanship we saw most of your athletes display. For not honking your horns. I didn't hear one car horn in 15 days -- which also means none of my fellow New Yorkers rented cars while visiting. For making us aware of how many of you have been watching NBC all these years. For having the good taste to have an anchorman named Brian Williams on your CTV network, who turns out to be such a nice guy. For the body scans at the airport which make pat-downs and cavity searches unnecessary. For designing those really cool LED Olympic rings in the harbor, which turned to gold when your athletes won one. For always saying nice things about the United States...when you know we're listening. For sharing Joannie Rochette with us. For reminding some of us we used to be a more civil society. Mostly, for welcoming the world with such ease and making lasting friends with all of us.
-- Brian Williams, NBC News
Re: Leaving behind a thank you note
I just loved NBC’s Brian Williams comments about his experience at the recent Vancouver Olympics. He reminded us all how special we are and how we have something worth protecting and worth sharing. Having lived in Australia for the last 16 years, I knew that coming home would be a great experience. Aussie love Canadians because of our love of sports and love of fair play. As Aussies would say ‘Fair Dinkem Mate’. We cherish our differences and embrace our multi-cultural ways. All of us in media need to amplify the good will of the Olympics and remain loyal to those values that others love so much. Doesn’t it feel great to know that the rest of the world has seen how good things can be if we all give a little something back. Oh Canada….

Ethnic Radio Cheers for Canada
The 2010 Winter Olympics may be almost over, but the Canadian spirit continues to soar. DJs, reporters and staff of a Vancouver ethnic radio station, Fairchild Radio (FM96.1 and AM1470), wore their “red, white and Canada” wardrobe to work today (Feb 26), in celebration of Canada’s admirable performance during the 2010 Winter Olympics. Since a majority of Fairchild Radio’s programming is in Chinese, most staff members are immigrants from Hong Kong, Taiwan and China. Yet they are all Canadians. When it is time to support the country, people at Fairchild proudly show off Canada’s colours on their clothes and hats while proudly waving the Canadian flag in their red-mitted hands. During the Winter Olympics, Fairchild Radio has been covering the games and the latest news of the proclaimed “biggest event in Vancouver, ever” with great enthusiasm. Listeners of the radio station are equally excited--especially about ice-skating and ice hockey, in addition to the other exciting events. Hundreds of listeners have called in during various radio programs, sharing their thoughts on everything from the performance of a particular competitor to the overall performance of the Vancouver government. A member of the nationwide media conglomerate Fairchild Media Group, Fairchild Radio is a multicultural radio station with operations in Vancouver (FM96.1 & AM1470), Calgary (FM94.7) and Toronto (AM1430 & FM88.9). On top of being Canada’s number one Chinese radio, Fairchild also provides quality radio programming in over 40 languages and acts as the hub of news, information, music and entertainment for the numerous yet affluent ethnic communities in these three cities.
